France-Brazil House

Founded in 1990, the France-Brazil House is located in a historic building commissioned in 1819 by Dom João VI to headquarter the first ‘Praça do Comércio’ in Rio de Janeiro during the colonial era.

Designed by the French architect Grandjean de Montigny, the building has served as a bank depot and the headquarters of the II Jury Court, before being declared a heritage site in 1938. The House today is a center of cultural diffusion and a reference for contemporary art. It belongs to the State Secretary of Culture.
