Looking down Ladeiro do João Homem

Taken in 1947 by Thomaz Farkas. Farkas, born Farkas Tamás György, in Budapest in 1924, was one of the pioneers of modern photography in Brazil. His father was was the founder of Fotopica, now Fotopica, a chain of stores for glasses, now operating in over 20 Brazilian cities (but not in Rio).

Farkas was one of the most productive members of the Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante, one of the oldest Brazilian photo clubs, based in São Paulo, and still active. Farkas’ most prominent work is perhaps his documenting of the construction and inauguration of Brasilia.

Farkas taught at the Escola de Comunicações e Artes da Universidade de São Paulo, part of USP, the University of São Paulo.

Farkas passed away in 2011.
